About Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area

Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area

Located along the North Saskatchewan River in central Alberta, Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area is renowned for its dramatic twin waterfalls cascading over a series of limestone escarpments within a deep river canyon. The area is part of the foothills region, where rolling hills transition into the Rocky Mountains to the west, providing a diverse landscape of mixed forests dominated by aspen, spruce, and pine. Crescent Falls has long been a popular outdoor destination, attracting day-use visitors seeking hiking trails, picnic areas, and swimming in river pools during warmer months. The recreation area lies near the community of Nordegg and is easily accessed via the David Thompson Highway. In addition to its striking natural features, Crescent Falls supports a healthy variety of wildlife, including deer, moose, black bears, and numerous bird species such as eagles and kingfishers. The clear waters of the North Saskatchewan River offer seasonal fishing and paddling opportunities. The area's rugged beauty, accessibility, and well-maintained facilities make it a favored spot for photographers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors should however exercise caution near the cliffs and swift river currents. The site is part of Alberta’s network of provincial recreation areas aimed at conserving natural values while providing safe, enjoyable recreational experiences. Nearby attractions include the extensive wilderness of Banff National Park to the west and multiple other provincial parks along the David Thompson corridor.
